THE SEASONAL MOMENT

October arrives this week and the county feels different. The air is cooler, the light is lower and softer by mid-afternoon, and the first hints of color are showing up in the northern portion of the peninsula.

The best of the fall color is still a week or two out, but it is close enough now that you can feel it coming.

Pay attention on your drive up.

DOOR COUNTY UPDATES

A few things worth knowing about this week.

A sure sign of autumn. The swim buoys came out of the water at Nicolet Beach in Peninsula State Park. If you have spent summers up here long enough, you know what that means. The beach is still beautiful in October and worth visiting on a clear afternoon, but the official swimming season is behind us. Fall has arrived.

The Younkers building gets its tenants. The search for occupants of the former Younkers building in downtown Sturgeon Bay is over. The Door County Economic Development Corporation will relocate its offices to the site. The goal is to move in next summer after the renovation is complete.

Nightingale Supper Club earns statewide recognition. Nightingale Supper Club in Sturgeon Bay has been named to the 2026 Wisconsin Prime Rib Trail, a list of 16 restaurants and supper clubs across the state recognized for their prime rib. If you have been to Nightingale you already know it belongs on this list. If you have not, this is a good reason to make a reservation before the fall season winds down.

Over 200 walkers take on 50 miles for MS. The Challenge Walk MS returned to Door County, with more than 200 participants walking up to 50 miles over three days through Fish Creek, Peninsula State Park, Ephraim, Egg Harbor, and Sister Bay. The event is one of three annual Challenge Walks held across the country and expects to raise more than $450,000 for multiple sclerosis research.

STORIES FROM THE DOOR

This week, a note about fall color and a request.

The leaves are starting to change. Right now, in the last days of September, the northern tip of the county is showing the first real color of the season. Ellison Bay, Gills Rock, and the roads around Newport State Park are where to look first. The color works its way south through October, typically peaking in the northern villages in early October and reaching Fish Creek, Egg Harbor, and Sturgeon Bay by mid-month.

We will be running a foliage report in this section for the next few weeks as the color develops. In the meantime, we want to see what you are seeing. If you are up here this weekend or any weekend through October, take a photo of the color and send it to [email protected]. Tell us where you were and when. The best shots will be featured right here and we will track the season together as it unfolds.

Find the complete fall foliage guide here. It will be update weekly and has a full animated map to help you plan your trip. Check it for timing, driving routes, and the spots worth seeking out when the color peaks.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED GUIDE

Fall festival season in Door County runs through the end of October and the calendar is as full as it gets all year. The complete fall festivals guide covers everything from the Lighthouse Festival to the Pumpkin Patch Festival to Fall Fest with dates, details, and everything you need to plan around the events worth showing up for.

HOUSES OF THE WEEK

Every week we spotlight a recently sold home and an active listing to give you a feel for what the Door County real estate market looks like.

JUST SOLD: Baileys Harbor

A three bedroom, three bath waterfront townhome duplex in Baileys Harbor sold for $1,100,000. Breathtaking sunset views and a large private yard round out a property that checks every box for waterfront Door County living.

FOR SALE: Egg Harbor

A one bedroom, one bath unit at Heritage Lake Resort in Egg Harbor is listed at $165,000. At 704 square feet with a large great room and most furniture included, this is about as low an entry point as you will find for owning a piece of Door County.

MY WEEKLY PICK

Husby's in Sister Bay is another one of those places we end up at nearly every trip without really planning it. It works for everything. We have been there with the boys when they were kids, we have been there just the two of us, and we have stopped in on a random Tuesday afternoon.

The outdoor Garage Bar is a reliable stop during a shopping day, especially when there is live music. The food is solid, the vibe is relaxed, and families are genuinely welcome. When you want somewhere low-key and dependable in the northern end of the county, Husby's always comes through.

WHERE TO STAY THIS WEEK

Coachlite Inn and Suites is a clean, comfortable property nestled in the pines just half a mile south of downtown Sister Bay, striking the right balance between seclusion and convenience. The biking, walking, and jogging trail runs directly in front of the inn, and the Country Walk Shops, Peach Barn Brewery, restaurants, and miniature golf are all within easy walking distance.

Room types range from standard rooms to king suites with whirlpools. The outdoor whirlpool under a gazebo, a fire pit, and a continental breakfast round out the amenities.

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE DOOR

Dani Maus plays live at Cherry Lanes Arcade Bar in Sturgeon Bay on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Cherry Lanes is one of the more unique spots in Sturgeon Bay, combining an arcade bar atmosphere with live music on the weekends. If you have not been, it is worth checking out on its own. Adding Dani Maus makes it a solid Friday night plan.

DOOR COUNTY ALMANAC

Week of September 29, 2026

Tuesday arrives at 66 degrees with low rain chances and mostly manageable skies. A good fall day to be outside. Wednesday brings a 75 percent chance of rain and a high of 64. Thursday clears back out nicely to 66 degrees with rain chances dropping to 15 percent.

The weekend shapes up well for the Lighthouse Festival. Friday comes in at 61 and dry. Saturday sits at 62 with a slight chance of rain. Sunday drops to 58 with lows pushing toward the upper 40s overnight, which is exactly the kind of temperature swing that accelerates fall color.

Sunrise Tuesday is at 6:43 a.m. Sunset comes around 6:47 p.m. Just over 12 hours of daylight. We are approaching the equinox and the evenings are arriving fast.

WHAT I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO

Full Moon Fever came out in 1989 and is one of those albums that sounds exactly like a specific era. Tom Petty wrote most of it by himself, recorded it cheaply and quickly, and delivered one of the most consistently enjoyable records of his career.

My buddies, the ones I wrote about a few weeks ago when we took them to the White Gull Inn for their first fish boil, used to play pickup basketball every Thursday night. Full Moon Fever was almost always on in the background. Free Fallin, I Won't Back Down, Runnin Down a Dream. Those songs and those Thursday nights are permanently connected in my memory.

DOOR COUNTY PETS

A note from Tank's family arrived this week and it meant a great deal.

Tank's owners reached out to say that Tank’s tribute brought them to tears, and that they were actually in Door County when they read it. They spent time at Tank's favorite park in Gills Rock, the small one at the tip of the county where the water opens up in every direction.

Thank you for letting us know. That is exactly what this section is for.

We want to see your pets enjoying Door County. Send a photo with with a name, a village, and whatever you want us to know about the moment. The best ones end up right here.

BEFORE YOU GO

  • The swim buoys are out.

  • The Lighthouse Festival is this weekend.

  • The color is starting in the north.

  • And Tank's family went back to Gills Rock.

Fall is here. Enjoy it.

See you up here,
Brian.
